Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water. The story of tea begins in China. According to legend, in 2737 BC, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree while his servant boiled drinking water, when some leaves from the tree blew into the water. Shen Nung, a renowned herbalist, decided to try the infusion that his servant had accidentally created.
From its origins in China, tea spread to Japan and other parts of Asia. Portuguese priests and merchants encountered tea in the 16th century during their travels to the East. However, it was the British who popularized tea in the West. The British East India Company began commercial tea production in India in the 19th century to compete with Chinese tea production.
Today, tea is grown in over 30 countries, with China, India, Kenya, and Sri Lanka being the largest producers. There are several varieties of tea, including black, green, oolong, and white tea, all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant. The differences between these types arise from the processing methods used after harvesting.
